Trash/Thrash Tuesday: Prayers – “Mexica”

Oh hi tiny friends.  How’s it going?

Are you full of Canadian Thanksgiving Turkey and stuffing and did you get horribly drunk and pass out in a plateful of pumpkin pie filling this past weekend?

If not, how dare you.

Since Columbus Day is today..  and what a fraud it is, it seemed only appropriate that cholo-rap-goth duo Prayers would release a video/song/rap/comment regarding the changing attitudes towards a holiday that essentially celebrates colonization and colonialism.

We all know Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America.  The Vikings did.  Way back when.

The name of Christopher Columbus is synonymous with oppression, slavery, and cultural and real genocide.

Many states and townships are now changing the name of the holiday to “Indigenous Peoples Day” which seems a bit more appropriate.

I personally love Prayers (I’ve talked about them in this column before). I think they’re babearonis and I really love the cholo-goth sound they’re trailblazing.  I like this video for the comment, the beautiful costumes, but I wasn’t sold on the rapping that accompanied it.

Since I’m one of Canadas indigenous peoples, I really get behind the message in this video and would put this one more into the THRASH side of Trash/Thrash Tuesday.

Check it out and decide for yourself.
