For anyone who came of age in or was kicking around in the ’90s, you’re probably familiar with Stargate, either through the original movie starring Kurt Russell (aka The Man) or the television series that went on forever headed by Richard Dean Anderson. That’s where Graveshadow, a symphonic goth metal outfit from Sacramento California, drew inspiration from for their newest track, at least in part. Vocalist Heather Michele explains: “When the music for the song was completed, it brought to me feelings of adventure and mysticism. I was reminded of the film “Stargate” from the ’90s and based the lyrics off of that. The odd yet compelling combination of ancient Egyptian imagery with a sci-fi twist has been a favourite of mine for years. It was only a matter of time before we included this tale in our catalog.”
With that said, even if you aren’t a big fan of Stargate saga there’s a bunch of things to dig on this track. Soaring vocals nicely balance out the more guttural elements, with Michele performing both with equal skill and passion. The more symphonic elements aka the keyboards add that nice otherworldly element that you’ve gotta have when you’re talking about Stargate, while never becoming an overbearing element that overshadows the metal elements. Graveshadow will be hitting the road in support of the upcoming album this track is from, ‘Ambitions Price’ starting next month, joining Sirenua and Threat Signal.
Also, anyone else getting a Witch Elf (from Warhammer) vibe off that cover art? I’m into it. Follow Graveshadow on Facebook to stay up to date on their fantasy fuelled metal.
