Trash/Thrash Tuesday: AFI – “Aurelia”

Oh hey there little friends.

How’s your week going so far?  You guys feeling good?  I know we are kinda in the middle of the winter blahs and everyone is slightly vitamin D deficient and as such as getting a little emo.  Look.  Here to tell you.  Go to Wal-Mart.  Buy some Vitamin D pills.  Take 2 a day and drink coffee until the sun comes back.

Now, last week when I was talking about Walls of Jericho, I also talked about AFI having a new album, and I figured that I should probably go have a listen.

Now, before I get too far entrenched into this and before any disgruntled members of the Despair Faction get salty – I have no issues with AFI.  I do 100% believe that Sing the Sorrow was their last good album, however, I can see where their music has a lot of great value to young kids and adults who are the freaky deaky types, the punk types, the vegans, LGBTQ and everything in between and on a personal level – I’ve met AFI and they’re pretty stand up decent dudes.  Now, I’m talking about meeting these guys back in the day when they could barely sell out shitty theatres and now they’ve gone on to sell out huge venues, so I mean I understand that things can change.  However, I have very fond memories of Davey patiently listening to fairly harrowing stories of self abuse from fans lined up to meet him.

Anywho – sorry to hit back into like fifteen fucking years ago there, but this is integral to this week’s Trash/Thrash Tuesday.  Now, AFI’s new album is called “The Blood Album”, it debuted in the Billboard Top 5 and has an accompanying tour going around so be sure to check that out.

Now, “Aurelia” is the song I’m going to have a look at this week, and I’ve gotta say straight off, I’m not feeling it.  Now, I dig the music, I reminds me a lot of older AFI.

But, the lyrics..  There’s literally ten lines in this song.

For a poet like Davey Havok, this is a little confusing.

It feels to me like this song could have been something bigger, but I mean, what the fuck do I know, people are apparently LOVING this album.

But it didn’t make my dick hard, I’ve gotta say.

Aurelia, the new wolves await
Aurelia, they brought you new chains

They’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
And you sing along

Aurelia, dream animals’ wills
Are real enough to make the slow kill

They’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
And you sing along

Can you see at night?
We can see at night
Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh
Can you see at night?
We can see at night
Oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh

And we’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
They’re barking in the wrong key
And you sing along
And you sing along
And you sing along
They’re barking in the wrong key
And you sing along

I’m really torn on how to feel about this track.  It’s feels so stripped down lyrically.

I mean, maybe I need to check out the whole album, but I have a sinking feeling it won’t do much for me.  I really didn’t care for Burials or Crash Love either.

I mean, that said, I have a sneaking suspicion that this music is no longer FOR me.

So take what I have to say on this with a grain of salt.  I’m a 31 year old woman.

Anyways, like I said before, AFI is currently on tour so be sure to check out them out live.

  1. Hi, I am 4 years younger than you and I totally agree with your opinion about Aurelia. I met AFI thanks to Decemberunderground. I was 16 back then. I got obsessed about Davey Havok and AFI’s amazing lyrics. I like Burials a lot, Crash Love…ehe… Medicate to me is the best song from It, the rest are not bad, but Aldo, not amazing. About AFI, the Blood álbum…I love White Offerings, but Aurelia is just bleh. I like the álbum, overall It is not bad, but as you wrote, there is something missing at the songs, specially with lyrics. To me Aurelia does not matter, It gives nothing to me too. I hope their next álbum to be stronger and better. Hope you are doing great, I will take your advice about vitamin D. Big hug*
