Trash/Thrash Tuesday: Youth Code – “For I Am Cursed”

Oh hi friends.  How’s your week going so far?

If you’re anything like me you’re sluggishly trying to shake off a really sad hangover caused by being drunk everyday since December 23rd in the hopes that you’ll be normal for the first day of school on Wednesday (unlikely).  You can’t wash off ugly, unfortunately.  Or awful.

Anywho, now that we’ve got that all sorted out, I wanted to pop on for today’s Trash/Thrash Tuesday column with something special for all my industrial goth EBM types out there.  I’ve been meaning to do a bit about Youth Code because I dig them just so much, but as mentioned previously, what with the heinous alcoholism, I forget things, and stuff gets weird.  Like the one time I woke up and my bed was covered in little plastic dinosaurs.  I’m not sure where they came from or how they got there, because I do not and did not up until that hazy morning/afternoon own any plastic dinosaurs.

Don’t do drugs, kids.

Youth Code is the new Skinny Puppy for a generation of kids that likely don’t know the great joy of cramming a Skinny Puppy cassette into your beater of a car, cranking it to deafening and driving it really fast with the windows rolled down down main street in your small town to freak out squares.  I legitimately did this.  More than once.

What’s funny though is that Youth Code and the Puppy have toured together, which is really just amazing.  The sound is very similar, the frenetic industrial noise machine coupled with a shouting voice.  Only this time, the voice comes from a tiny little silver haired lady named Sara and man can she belt that shit out. I really think these guys sound a lot like the Knife and Skinny Puppy mixed together.
Maybe I’m high again, who knows.

Anyways, if you don’t know Youth Code, please remedy this situation and go visit their Bandcamp and give them some support. Nice to see some bands out there doing stuff like this!

Pen to paper with invisible ink
Displaying honesty with nothing to show
Recanting the taste of the knife
A sweet to bury me forever
We’re trapped in casings made of arsenic and inclinations
Indigence from the heart trudging on so unfulfilled

I haven’t been so much as thrilled to be alive
For I am cursed and holding on
To this semblance of a life

I cannot shake
The jinx that’s applied
The haunts that encroach
A rain that won’t dry
I’m drinking my options
And dying of thirst
The shadows still lingering
For I am cursed
The lights have been dim lit
The candles burned wet
No shelter to house this
A plague that cant set
A scratch at this ulcer
A prayer that it bursts
A longing for solace
For I am cursed

Mouth to bottle with a hunger for regret
Paralyzed in an infant state
Our feelings benumbed by our consumptions
Every kiss a coat to peel and flake
Habituation a crutch which once brought solace
Now choleric as there is no other choice
Cauterize the wounds which exposures
Smoldering ache which begat the vice

I’ve never felt such vapid space behind my eyes
For I am cursed and moving past
The orchestrator of these cries

I cannot shake
The jinx that’s applied
The haunts that encroach
A rain that won’t dry
I’m drinking my options
And dying of thirst
The shadows still lingering
For I am cursed
The lights have been dim lit
The candles burned wet
No shelter to house this
A plague that cant set
A scratch at this ulcer
A prayer that it bursts
A longing for solace
For I am cursed

I cannot shake
The jinx that’s applied
The haunts that encroach
A rain that won’t dry
I’m drinking my options
And dying of thirst
The shadows still lingering
For I am cursed
The lights have been dim lit
The candles burned wet
No shelter to house this
A plague that cant set
A scratch at this ulcer
A prayer that it bursts
A longing for solace
For I am cursed

Youth Code is also currently touring, so if you can, please see them live!
