Trash/Thrash Tuesday: Cough – Let it Bleed

Cough’s newest album, “Still They Prey,” was released to the public a few months ago, a smoke fuelled monster of feedback and distortion that shows Cough mean business and are going to be around for a while. It’s full of all the stuff you’d normally expect from a doom release in 2016: Sabbath worship, audio samples of spooky female voices, at least 10 minutes of album time dedicated to just feedback. You know, all the stuff we’ve come to expect.

Waiting for you in the middle of all this is “Let it Bleed,” utilizing clean vocals and acting like a flickering candle against the encroaching darkness. I always want to see people push buttons and try new things, especially when it comes to metal because no one likes change less than metal heads. Clean vocals are basically blasphemy (no, not them) in many circles, so I imagine there’s a fair share who don’t care for this track. Just go check the braintrust over at r/metal, I’m sure it won’t take long to find a few examples. If you can handle things being a little different and don’t require every guitar to be turned up to 11 all the time, hit play.
