Trash/Thrash Tuesday: Stabbing Westward – “What Do I Have To Do?”

Oh hey little friends.

I missed my Monday morning movie rant because the movie I watched this past weekend was so oppressively bland it’s really been an endurance trial to write that fucking review.

Anywho, I’ve got a special little treat for you on this lovely sunny Trash/Thrash Tuesday with a special THRASH edition straight out of the 1990s way back machine with Stabbing Westward.  Anyone remember those guys or was I the only one who spent a lot of time cutting myself to their music when I was naught but a little thing in really black baggy pants and black nailpolish?

I was a real charmer, and can see no reason why I didn’t have more friends, given my clear mental stability, good looks and technically good 14 year old physique.

I kid.

But seriously though.  I remember my cousin listened to what I thought at the time to be really complicated and hard music.  Once while taking me back from a field trip to the old tire pit to shoot guns at cans and where he could ogle the boobies of his then twenty something girlfriend (I’m sure that went over well btw, bringing along your black clad autistic cousin on a date with your gf), he put on some music I thought was really hard rocking and interesting, and that music was Stabbing Westward.

Since I was basically an idiot, and since my cousin and I actually hung out a lot, he ended up giving me the Stabbing Westward, “Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel” CD and I played it at top volume until the fucking thing wore out.  I liked that Stabbing Westward didn’t sound nu-metaly..  It wasn’t music that was too hard either.  I could understand the words, and it sure didn’t hurt that the singer was a depressed little creampuff who likely moistened a lot of panties back in his day.

I remember being near blacked out drunk during the Season Five finale of True Blood and hearing Save Yourself by Stabbing Westward, and that was a real trip.

Apparently their music is still somewhat relevant and also still spoopy.

Since everything from the 1990s is coming back into style like Daria, plastic clothes, tattoo choker necklaces and fucking rave pacifiers, could we see to setting about bringing back music that sounds like Stabbing Westward?

I would 100% be all about it.  Getting pretty sick of listening to screechy ass shit.

Anyways, the too long didn’t read version of this post is that I’m a spoopy ass loser goth and Stabbing Westward was pretty legit.

You make it hard to breathe
It’s as if I’m suffocating
And when you’re next to me
I can feel your heartbeat through my skin
It makes me sad to think
This all could be for nothing
I wish there was a way
For you to see inside of me
I’ve never felt this way
About anyone or anything
Tell me
What do I have to do to make you happy?
What do I have to do to make you understand?
What do I have to do to make you want me?
And, if I can’t make you want me
What do I have to do?

I know exactly what you’re thinking
But I swear this time I will not let you down
I’m not as selfish as I used to be
That was a part of me that never made me proud
Right now I think I would try anything
Anything at all to keep you satisfied
God I hope you see what loving you would do to me
All I want is one more chance, so tell me…
What do I have to do to make you love me?

Gonna pop in here and say that these lyrics are the very definition of codependent.

Because let’s remember folks, it ain’t real love until you’ve MADE someone love you.

  1. The acoustic version of that song is actually pretty good. Especially because he admits that it’s about a girl that dumped him for her personal trainer. That whole album is actually pretty hard for me to listen to. A little too close to home. Especially Why.
